Overnight Vision Correction

ortho K

Ortho K

Ortho K, previously known as Orthokeratology, is a highly innovative technique involving wearing lenses whilst sleeping - overnight the cornea reshapes, improving vision. The lens is removed in the morning and the patient is free from the need to wear spectacles or contact lenses during waking hours.

Brosgill Opticians is delighted to have invested in a state of the art Corneal Topographer and has trained optometrists and contact lens opticians with the necessary skills to provide this new and exciting development in the contact lens arena.

Ortho K is ideal for people who:

Tick Want clear natural vision
Tick Want to be free from lenses for sports or outdoor activities (especially water sports)
Tick Do not want to undergo laser refractive surgery
Tick Find contact lenses do not fulfill their needs
Tick Find it hard to wear lenses all day without discomfort
Tick Suffer from hay fever
Tick Work in a dry or smoky atmosphere
Tick Work in a dusty or wet environment
Tick Find spectacles and conventional lenses just a plain nuisance
Tick Children who's shortsightedness is progressive

What are the advantages?

Tick Provides good vision throughout the day without the need to wear spectacles or contact lenses
Tick Elimination of contact lens associated problems - e.g. dryness
Tick Non-surgical, non-invasive procedure -it's therefore suitable for those concerned about the risks associated with surgical techniques
Tick An efficient procedure - the majority of myopic correction occurs after the first night of lens wear
Tick Little to no adaptation period - unlike most conventional rigid contact lenses
Tick Procedure is reversible and can of course be modified as required

What are the disadvantages?

Tick The treatment is not permanent and vision will regress back to original levels in the event that lens wear is discontinued
Tick Some increase in visual aberrations in differing lighting conditions
Tick Unstable refractive correction - visual acuity can reduce slightly during the day, particularly in the early stages of the treatment

Is the procedure suitable for everybody?

At this moment in time the procedure is only suitable for low to mid levels of myopic (short sighted) eyes, up to around -4.50 dioptres. Low levels of astigmatism can also be corrected, up to -1.50. However, research is continuing at a rapid rate and the expansion of suitable corrections can be expected in the near future.
